巧克力是一种热带可可豆制品。可可豆苦到连猴子尝过都会‘呃’的一声之后远远跑开，所以工人们会第一时间将可可豆脱水之后烘焙，这样可以去除可可豆的苦味。
巧克力一词来自于玛雅文化。玛雅文化是一种曾今存在于墨西哥的文明。玛雅人珍视可可树，当时就有人贩卖可可豆给他人碾碎用以制作饮品来牟利。
当西班牙人在十六世纪到达墨西哥时，他们也开始饮用可可饮品。因为这种饮品强烈的苦，所以西班牙人认为这是一种药品，从没有人想到过往里面加些糖。回到欧洲的西班牙人带回一些可可豆并发明了咖啡。有钱人开始饮用咖啡，并且认为这有利于消化。
1800年，英格兰的可可工厂主发现了糖可以去掉可可中的苦味，这种加糖的可可饮品迅速的成为了一种受欢迎的廉价饮品。随后，一家工厂生产出了甜巧克力棒。之后，另外一家工厂把牛奶和巧克力混合在一起。人们都越来越喜欢这种牛奶巧克力的味道。
除了巧克力棒之外，另外一最受欢迎的美国零食是巧克力豆饼干。最受欢迎的餐后甜点是巧克力奶昔派，当然还有一杯浇上了热软糖酱汁的圣代冰淇淋。
