早期版本的Windows通常仅仅被看作是一个图形用户界面，不是操作系统，主要因为它们在MS-DOS上运行并且被用作文件系统服务。不过，即使最早的16位版本的Windows也已经具有了许多典型的操作系统的功能，包括拥有自己的可执行文件格式以及为应用程序提供自己的设备驱动程序（计时器、图形、打印机、鼠标、键盘以及声卡）。

另外，现在疯狂肆虐的电脑病毒几乎都是针对Windows的，由于MAC的架构与 Windows不同，所以很少受到病毒的袭击。MAC OSX操作系统界面非常独特，突出了形象的图标和人机对话(人机对话界面就是由苹果公司最早开创的，后来才被微软的Windows所看中并在 Windows中广泛应用)。苹果公司能够根据自己的技术标准生产电脑、自主开发相对应的操作系统，可见它的技术和实力非同一般。打个比方，苹果公司就像是Dell和微软的联合体，在软硬件方面“才貌双全”。

Linux的基本思想有两点：第一，一切都是文件；第二，每个软件都有确定的用途。其中第一条详细来讲就是系统中的所有都归结为一个文件，包括命令、硬件和软件设备、操作系统、进程等等对于操作系统内核而言，都被视为拥有各自特性或类型的文件。至于说Linux是基于Unix的，很大程度上也是因为这两者的基本思想十分相近。
