英语中音素分为元音音素和辅音音素两大类。其中元音音素20个，辅音音素24个。
元音：发音时声带振动，呼出的气流通过口腔时不受阻碍，这样形成的语音称作元音。元音发音响亮，口腔中气流不受阻碍，是构成音节的主要音。英语中有20个元音。
辅音：不论声带振动与否，发声时呼出的气流通过口腔或鼻腔时受到一定阻碍，这样的语音称为辅音。辅音发音不响亮，口腔中气流受到阻碍，不是构成音节的主要音。英语中有24个辅音。（有的书将[ts]、[dz]、[tr]、[dr] 也归为辅音，即有28个辅音，共48个音素。）

有人称元音是字母灯letter lights,你要依靠灯才看到亮光,也就是说每个单词都要有起码一盏灯(一个元音)否则就不成为一个字.
元音里主要是记住它们的长音和短音.长音就是发跟它们本身的名字一样的音,如ay,ai a+e 就发跟字母A的音一样.
ee.ea 跟字母E一样, i+e,ie跟字母I 一样,o+e,ow 跟字母O一样,u+e,ui跟字母O一样.很好记得.
另外有些特殊的,igh也发字母I的音
短音a/a/, e/e/,i/i/,o/o/,u/u/
辅音很多跟拼音差不多,主要就是要记混音(blends)bl,cl,sl etc.和合音(digraphs) ch, sh, th
y是个半元音,fly/ai/ snowy /i/
