1928年透明胶带理查·德鲁，美国明尼苏达州圣保罗1928年5月30日在英国和美国提出申请，德鲁开发出了一种很轻的、一压即合的黏合剂，最初的一次尝试不够粘，因而德鲁被告知：“把这玩意儿拿回到你那些苏格兰老板那里去，要他们多放一些胶。”（“苏格兰”的意思是“吝啬”。）但是，大萧条期间，人们为这种胶带找到了几百种用途，从补衣服到保护碰破的鸡蛋它都大有用途。
使用原理
胶带是由基材和胶黏剂两部分组成,通过粘接使两个或多个不相连的物体连接在一起。其表面上涂有一层粘着剂。最早的粘着剂来自动物和植物，在十九世纪，橡胶是粘着剂的主要成份；而现代则广泛应用各种聚合物。粘着剂可以粘住东西，是由于本身的分子和欲连接物品的分子间形成键结，这种键结可以把分子牢牢地黏合在一起。 粘着剂的成份，依不同厂牌、不同种类，有各种不同的聚合物。
