图片参考：.image.auctions.yahoo/users/5/4/4/5/devilwing1215-img600x450-1178651651_______016-3 (上图的4块条状物便是由mother 0f pearl-贝母打磨而成，旁边细粒的是平价淡水养珠) Mother of Pearl不是珍珠，中文译贝母或珍珠贝母，即是产珠的贝谷的闪亮内壁。该闪亮部份即是珍珠质nacre，和珍珠的成份一样。贝母和珍珠的成份一样，都是由珍珠质nacre组成。但珍珠是珠蚌在植入珠核后不断分泌珍珠质包裹而成的珠状物，而贝母则是分泌出的珍珠质在贝谷内壁积聚而成的层状、片状物。贝母通常都是打磨做薄片，用以装饰用途(eg. 手表面)或入药。贝母只是珍珠生产过程中的副产品，亦可谓废物利用，故原料的价值不大，主要是手工费用。常见的饰物只值十几至几十元(例如以上手链在yahoo拍卖只叫价HK$35)，和贵价珍珠相差很远。
