端午节这天，一定要吃粽子。粽子好吃，要感谢我们勤劳聪明的先辈。据说这和纪念伟大的爱国诗人屈原有关。当年，屈原投汨罗江后，当地百姓闻讯马上划船捞救，一直行至洞庭湖，终不见屈原的尸体。百姓们怕江河里的鱼吃掉他的身体，就纷纷回家拿来米团投入江中喂鱼。后来就演变成了吃粽子的习俗。

听爷爷奶奶说，在他们小时候，战火纷飞，别说吃粽子了，连性命都随时可能丢掉；到了爸爸妈妈小时候，新中国刚刚成立，生活水平差，就算是吃上粽子，也是极其普通的“内容”。哪像我们这一代，赶上了太平盛世，物质生活及其丰富，看吧，什么“内容”的粽子都有：甜的有蜜枣、榛子、薏仁……咸的有猪肉、牛肉、火腿……还有水果味道的，真是品种繁多，令人眼花缭乱。

今天是一年一度的端午节，大家都知道端午节是纪念屈原而成的一个节日，这一天家家户户都要吃粽子。

现在粽子的品种有很多！有蜜馅、肉馅、红枣馅、绿豆馅等等，我是喜欢吃肉馅，今天我就要亲手做一个肉馅的粽子。事先把糯米放在水里泡12个小时，再把粽叶洗净准备一捆细棉绳，就可以包粽子了，我先看妈妈做一个，妈妈先拿出来两片粽叶，两头叠在一起，麻利地做成一个漏斗形，再把事先泡好的糯米放进去再用勺子压实，我看到这里说：“妈妈快，快把五花肉包进去，”“好好，满足你这个小馋猫，”妈妈爽快答应了，再放上一层糯米压实，最后把剩下的叶子包好捆上细绳。一个粽子就包好了，我心想：这也不难嘛？我信心满满地上前，拿起粽子叶，学着妈妈的样子，折好粽叶，可是到了压糯米时，意外出现了，我力用了太大把叶子胀破了，糯米像决堤的洪水，一窝蜂地跑了出来，我傻眼了，我有些想放弃了，妈妈鼓励我：“失败是成功之母。”听了这句话我的信心一下子又回来了，第二次在妈妈细心教导下真的成功了，可是粽子不怎么好看，终于到了我最喜欢的步骤，只见妈妈把粽子放进蒸锅里，粽子们像跳水运动员一个个360度旋转下“锅”，可是要等20分钟，有点迫不及待了，我盼星星，盼月亮时终于到了，闻到了香味，一看时间刚刚好，我也不管三七二十一，解开绳子，掀开粽叶，露出了白色的糯米，我咬了一口。烫得我直咧嘴，糯米粘粘的还有油。香味特好吃，我实在是抵挡不了它的诱惑，再烫也要忍着，我一连吃了好几个。

而在那天，对于我这个“吃货”来说，最喜欢的就是包粽子、吃粽子。每次奶奶总会先准备箬叶、糯米、鲜肉、细线。她先把两片叶子叠起来，弄成一个漏斗的形状，然后往里面加入一半的糯米和两块鲜肉，最后把米加满，盖上箬叶，一个精巧的粽子就包完了。这样看着奶奶这么熟练的技法，我也决定试一试。我学着拿起两片碧绿色、长条状的箬叶，用手把箬叶折成漏斗状，但这两片叶子却像两个顽皮的孩子，怎么都不听话。我只好用手指拼命地捏住，快速地把糯米倒进去，糯米发出了“沙沙”的响声，好像在劝说这两片箬叶，又赶忙放了两块诱人的肉，然后把糯米迅速加满。最后，我用力地把展开的箬叶严严实实地包好，再小心翼翼地用细绳来了个“五花大绑”，不让一粒糯米“逃”出来。看着这个样子虽然不好看，但是亲手包的粽子，我的心里别提有多自豪了！

我和我的妈妈准备好糯米、粽叶和线等，开始包粽子。我目不转睛地看着，只见妈妈拿一张粽叶卷成漏斗型，再往里面加上参有红豆的糯米，然后用粽叶包成三角形，最后用线把它拴好。看着妈妈包粽子，我不解地问妈妈：“端午节为什么要吃粽子呢?”妈妈耐心地给我讲到：“端午节是古老的传统节日，始于中国的春秋战国时期，至今已有2000多年的历史了。

当时，由一个着名的诗人叫屈原，他倡导举贤授能，富国强兵，力主联齐抗秦，遭到贵族子兰等人的强烈反对，屈原遭馋去职，被赶出都城，流放到沅、湘流域。后来，秦军攻破楚国京都。屈原眼看自己的祖国被侵略，心如刀割，但是始终不忍舍弃自己的祖国。在阴历5月5日这天，他写下了绝笔作《怀沙》之后，抱石投汨罗江身死，以自己的生命谱写了一曲壮丽的爱国主义乐章。真是太可惜了!”听完妈妈讲的故事，我不由自主地叹息道。

端午节又叫午日节，是是我国二千多年的旧习俗，在这一天，就会有赛龙舟，吃粽子的习俗。

端午节的第一个意义就是纪念历伟大的民族诗人屈原。屈原，名平，是战国时代的楚国人，生于楚威王五年夏历正月初七，或谓生于楚宣王二十七年，卒于楚襄王九年。

端午节的第二个意义是伍子胥的忌辰。伍子胥名员，楚国人，父兄均为楚王所杀，后来子胥弃暗投明，奔向吴国，助吴伐楚，五战而入楚都郢城。当时楚平王已死，子胥掘墓鞭尸三百，以报杀父兄之仇。吴王阖庐死后，其子夫差继位，吴军士气高昂，百战百胜，越国大败，越王勾践请和，夫差许之。子胥建议，应彻底消灭越国，夫差不听，吴国大宰，受越国-，谗言陷害子胥，夫差信之，赐子胥宝剑，子胥以此死。子胥本为忠良，视死如归，在死前对邻舍人说："我死后，将我眼睛挖出悬挂在吴京之东门上，以看越-队入城灭吴。"便自刎而死，夫差闻言大怒，令取子胥之尸体装在皮革里于五月五日投入大江，因此相传端午节亦为纪念伍子胥之日。

端午节第三个意义是为纪念东汉孝女曹娥救父投江而死。曹娥是东汉上虞人，父亲溺于江中，数日不见尸体，当时孝女曹娥年仅十四岁，昼夜沿江号哭。过了十七天，在五月五日也投江，五日后抱出父尸。就此传为神话，继而相传至县府知事，令度尚为之立碑，让他的弟子邯郸淳作诔辞颂扬。孝女曹娥之墓，在今浙江绍兴，后传曹娥碑为晋王义所书。后人为纪念曹娥的孝节，在曹娥投江之处兴建曹娥庙，她所居住的村镇改名为曹娥镇，曹娥殉父之处定名为曹娥江。

端午节第四个意义是纪念现代革命女诗人秋瑾。秋瑾是六月五日殉国，后人为敬仰其诗，复哀其忠勇事迹，乃与诗人节合并举行纪念，而诗人节亦因纪念爱国诗人屈原而定为端午节。秋瑾字睿卿竞雄，号鉴湖女侠，小字玉姑，浙江绍兴人，幼年擅长诗、词、歌、赋，且喜骑马击剑，有花木兰、秦良玉在世之称。28岁时参加革命，影响极大，预谋起义，开会时为清兵所捕，不屈，于光绪三十三年六月五日在绍兴轩亨口英勇就义。

Six months ago Xie Lei said goodbye to her family and friends in China and boarded a plane for London. It was the first time she had ever left her motherland. "After getting my visa I was very excited because I had dreamed of this day for so long. But I was also very nervous as I didn't know what to expect," Xie Lei told me when I saw her waiting in a queue at the student cafeteria between lectures.

He wanted to know what I thought, which confused me because I thought that the author of the article knew far more than I did. My tutor explained that I should read lots of different texts that contain different opinions and analyse what I read. Then, in my essay, I should give my own opinion and explain it by referring to other authors. Finally he even encouraged me to contradict the authors I'd read! At first I lacked confidence, but now I'm beginning to get the idea and my marks have improved. More importantly, I am now a more autonomous learner."

One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my ecation suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others.
My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year I invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while。
Larry Belmont worked for a company that made robots. Recently it had begun experimenting with a household robot. It was going to be tested out by Larry's wife, Claire.
Claire didn't want the robot in her house, especially as her husband would be absent for three weeks, but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn't harm her or allow her to be harmed. It would be a bonus. However, when she first saw the robot, she felt alarmed. His name was Tony and he seemed more like a human than a machine. He was tall and handsome with smooth hair and a deep voice although his facial expression never changed.
"Come on, Clancy. To the boat," George said as he ran ahead of me. I had already heard that George didn't like being kept waiting, so even though I didn't have the right clothes on, I raced after him.
Without pausing we jumped into the boat with the other whalers and headed out into the bay. I looked down into the water and could see Old Tom swimming by the boat, showing us the way.
A few minutes later, there was no Tom, so George started beating the water with his oar and there was Tom, circling back to the boat, leading us to the hunt again.
Using a telescope we could see that something was happening. As we drew closer, I could see a whale being attacked by a pack of about six other killers.
There's no electricity or water and even no textbooks either! I'm still trying to adapt to these conditions. However, one thing is for sure, I've become more imaginative in my teaching. Science is my most challenging subject as my students have no concept of doing experiments. In fact there is no equipment, and if I need water I have to carry it from my house in a bucket!The other day I was showing the boys the weekly chemistry experiment when, before I knew it, the mixture was bubbling over everywhere!The boys who had never come across anything like this before started jumping out of the windows.Sometimes I wonder how relevant chemistry is to these students, most of whom will be going back to their villages after Year 8 anyway. To be honest, I doubt whether I'm making any difference to these boys' lives at all.
You asked whether I'm getting to know any local people. Well, that's actually quite difficult as I don't speak much of the local English dialect yet. But last weekend another teacher, Jenny, and 1 did visit a village which is the home of one of the boys, Tombe. It was my first visit to a remote village. We walked for two and a half hours to get there - first up a mountain to a ridge from where we had fantastic views and then down a steep path to the valley below. When we arrived at the village, Tombe's mother, Kiak, who had been pulling weeds in her garden, started crying "ieee ieee".We shook hands with all the villagers. You have to get used to a whole new way of life, which can take up all your concentration in the beginning," explained Xie Lei, who had lived all her life in the same city in China.She told me that she had had to learn almost everything again."Sometimes I felt like a child," she said."I had to learn how to use the phone, how to pay bus fare, and how to ask a shopkeeper for things I didn't know the English for.When I got lost and had to ask a passer-by for directions, I didn't always understand.They don't talk like they do on our listening tapes," she said, laughing.
Xie Lei lives with a host family who give her lots of good advice. Although some foreign students live in student accommodation or apartments, some choose to board with English families. Living with host families, in which there may be other college students, gives her the chance to learn more about the new culture. "When I hear an idiom that I don't understand, I can ask my host family for help," explains Xie Lei. "Also, when I miss my family, it's a great comfort to have a substitute family to be with."
