The owner in the middle then prepared a large sign that simply stated, "ENTRANCE".
前二句都是简单句，后面三句结构相同，The retailer 主语on the right 定语put up 谓语huge signs宾语 saying分词作定语；第三句that simply stated,用了定语从句，没有用分词作定语。
