音乐创作本身就是智慧和灵感的碰撞，二者缺一便不会创作出优秀的作品。音乐创作的形式是多种多样的，不一定创作出的都是民歌。有交响曲、协奏曲、器乐独奏曲、艺术歌曲等等……
要说音乐创作和民歌最根本的区别那就是，民歌是劳动者真实感情的自然流露，它的产生并不是劳动者有意识的创作；音乐创作则是音乐创作者有意识有目的的创作活动。如果说民歌的产生是偶然的，那么音乐创作出来的作品则是必然的。
第一，和人民的社会生活有着最直接最紧密的联系
民歌的作者是人民群众．是他们在长期的劳动、生活实践中，为了表现自己的生活、抒发自己的感情、表达自己的意志、愿望而创作的。在过去，劳动人民被剥夺了掌握文化的权利，不识字、更不懂谱，但他们却用口口相传的方式编唱着自己的歌曲，以满足生活的需要。如《长工苦》《揽工人儿难》倾吐了遭受欺诈压迫的长工的悲苦情怀；《绣荷包》抒发了少女对情人的思恋和对幸福生活的憧憬；《打夯号子》、《川江船夫号子》等，表现了劳动者在与自然作斗争时的豪迈气概；《花*》、《冬丝娘》等，唱出了儿童们游戏时天真无邪的性格。但“有假诗人，无假山歌”(明，冯梦龙)。民歌所表现的人民群众的思想感情是最真实、最深切的。
第二，民歌是经过广泛的群众性的即兴编作、口头传唱而逐渐形成和发展起来的。它是无数人智慧的结晶
民歌的创作过程和演唱过程、流传过程是合而为一的．在传唱的过程中即兴创作，在编创的过程中演唱、流传，当然，传统民歌的创作和发展过程是缓慢的、自发的。
第三．音乐形式具有简明朴实、平易近人、生动灵活的特点。
民歌的音乐形式短小精干， 大多以乐段为基本结构单位，单乐段反复而构成分节歌的结构形式在民歌中占有很大的比例、民歌的音乐材料和表现手法都很经济、洗炼。民歌的音调大多具有浓郁的乡土气息、和地方色彩，它与方言语音结合紧密，音乐表现很生活化，形式灵活、生动，没有固定的格律．善于变化．对各种不同的内容、唱词、演唱场合与条件有很强的适应能力。
