because 是连词，其后接句，because of 是复合介词，其后接名词、代词、动名词、what 从句等，until直到，unless，除非．根据They had to put off the sports meeting ______the heavy rain，可知因为大雨，他们不得不推迟运动会．这里表示原因，又rain是名词，所以用because of．故选B．
