全世界约有2000多座死火山、500多座活火山。火山形形色色，各有特点。有的会喷金吐银，喷水，喷泥浆，喷冰块，喷蒸汽，喷毒气等等。 

意大利西西里岛的埃特纳火山有史以来曾爆发了500多次，是从未中断的有规律性的活火山。火山爆发停止时，火山口还终年冒着浓烟，晚上可以清楚地看到烟云上回照的熊熊火光。活火山的奇景吸引着千万游客前去观光。法国科学家最近探查出这座火山每天约喷出2000克的金子和9000克的银子，但目前还无法收集。 

哈萨克东部的缅布拉克山谷有个喷水的火山，它喷发出来的不是熔岩和蒸汽，而是冰冷的水。因此，科学家叫它喷水火山。火山口直径1000多米，深50米。火山口周围长满了各种植物。为什么火山会喷水呢？原来，北部的天山山脉高山冰川融化的冰水，流到这一带松散的砾石里积聚，由于上面粘土层的挤压而喷出地面。喷水时，水中夹杂泥沙一起喷出，顶端形成一个半球形，十分壮观。在大西洋岛国巴巴多斯东部5000米深处，法国科学家借助电视屏幕发现了一座泥火山，海底有一个宽约1000米的椭圆形火山口，里面翻滚着泥浆和气泡。 

冰岛是个冰与火的国土。全岛有300多座火山，至今还有30多座活火山在此起彼伏地喷发着，也常常发生地震；有大量的温泉，水温很高，热气弥漫。冰岛有1／8的土地为冰川覆盖，冰与火结合，使冰岛更加瑰丽神奇。冰川、雪峰多簇拥在火山口附近，一边是火山爆发，一边是冰天雪地，火山在冰川下突然爆发，顷刻将冰层融化，引起山洪突发，洪水泛滥。冰雪之水泻进火山口，形成湖泊。冰雪消融，形成飞泉瀑布。 

冰岛南部的格里斯维特火山爆发，喷出的全是冰块，持续了两周，每秒钟大约喷出420立方米的冰块。这一次总共喷出了大约1．3立方千米体积的冰块。原来，这座火山喷出的气体把地面上的冰川冰块，接二连三地抛到空中，它们来不及融化就降落到地面上来，形成火山喷冰的奇观。 

夏威夷群岛的火山，每次喷发时散逸出的有害气体特别多，一股难闻的硫磺味，还有水银蒸汽。附近的人们呼吸困难，家里的银器突然变黑，岛上的野兽惊慌乱跑，有的家畜呆若木鸡，沿海大量的浮游生物和小鱼死去。
