The homework is to write a 500 word essay which is surprisingly long compared to 500 words in Chinese. I have no idea why a grade five student is expected to write an essay this long, they've learned barely 500 vocabularies in 5 years of English ecation. The ability to use new vocabularies is not developed by writing things over and over again, it is developed through application in daily life, real life situations and repeated multiple times. This is next to impossible in a country whose official language has no similarity to English, such as China. If the teacher really want to see a 500 word essay from a grade 5 student, then their expectations are too high. This will only force the students to write nonsense, just to achieve the word count, is that what the whole English course is about? To be able to write with perfect grammar but cannot speak a single sentence without translating every word in the mind first. Is that what we're trying to achieve with emphasizing the English course? That is something to think about.
