1. The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is celebrated annually on May 5th in the Gregorian calendar. According to the "Jingchu Years Record," the fifth month corresponds to the zenith of summer, and the first day of the fifth lunar month is considered the best time for ascending heights in alignment with the sun's beneficial rays. Therefore, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month is also known as "Zhuanyang Festival." Additionally, Duanwu Festival is also referred to as "Mid-Summer Festival," "Fifth Month Festival," "Dragon Boat Festival," and "Lily Flower Festival" among others.
2. Duanwu Festival is a traditional cultural holiday widely celebrated in China and within the Chinese character cultural sphere. It originated in ancient China, initially as a festival for tribes in the Baiyue region (along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and southward) that revered the dragon totem. These tribes had the custom of holding totem rituals in the form of dragon boat races on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
3. Later, the festival took on a new significance when楚国 (now Hubei) poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on this day ring the Warring States period. In commemoration of his loyalty and patriotism, the ruling class designated Duanwu Festival as a day to remember Qu Yuan. In some regions, it is also celebrated to honor figures like Wu Zixu and Cao E. Duanwu Festival, together with Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, is counted among the four major traditional Chinese festivals. Folk activities include dragon boat races, calamus and mugwort decorations, eating traditional zongzi, drinking realgar wine, writing charms, playing shuttlecock, horseball, collecting herbs, washing with calamus decoction, picking tea leaves, preparing cool tea, driving away five poisonous creatures, turning over disaster gourds, competing in grass games, and avoiding the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Traditional foods include zongzi, realgar wine, dishes incorporating five yellow ingredients, twelve red dishes, tea eggs, garlic eggs, sweet rice cakes, and fried glutinous rice balls.
