I was shocked and deeply sad when I read the story for the first time. It seem like just in a sudden a friend who had taught me so much——from how to get the knoeledge to how to use the knowledge to help people and society——and whose spirit had affected me so much, passed away. There is no doubt that Sherlock Holmes is a great man, but most people think that he's great just because of his wisdom, which is totally wrong. In this story, Sherlock Holmes's enermy, Professor Moriarty, who is considered as Napoleon of crime by Holmes, causes huge demage to the society, and through which he gets a great amount of money. While Holmes is trying to stop him, risking his own life to struggle with the criminal organization and getting nothing in return. He's not a policeman and he's not paid. After reading the story, I understand that "greatness"
doesn't mean just being wise. It just depends on whether we can contribute our best to the society.
